The TARGetAMR Network was pleased to welcome over 100 delegates to Birmingham on 14–15 May 2026 for its flagship in‑person conference. Bringing together researchers, clinicians, policymakers, industry partners, and funders, the event provided a dynamic platform to explore how genomics can help address the growing global challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Across two engaging days, the programme highlighted the breadth of work taking place across the community and reinforced the importance of collaboration in advancing AMR research and innovation. Central themes included the application of genomics in real-world settings, transdisciplinary collaboration, and the critical need to translate research into policy and clinical practice. Discussions also placed strong emphasis on global partnerships, capacity building, and the social and ethical dimensions of AMR genomics, alongside the importance of Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) in shaping meaningful and inclusive research.
The conference opened with a keynote from Associate Professor Claas Kirchhelle, who set the scene by exploring current global AMR challenges and opportunities for innovation. This was followed by the launch of TARGetAMR’s Flexible Funding Initiative, designed to catalyse new, transdisciplinary collaborations across the network.
A rich programme of short talks and flash presentations showcased cutting-edge research spanning clinical, environmental, and agricultural contexts. From genomic surveillance and healthcare implementation to environmental monitoring and livestock systems, these sessions highlighted the diversity of approaches being used to understand and tackle AMR. Two panel discussions focused on co-creation and PPIE in AMR research, and the pathways through which genomics can inform policy and practice, prompting valuable cross-sector dialogue.
Interactive elements were a key feature of the event. A structured networking session provided dedicated space for delegates to connect, exchange ideas, and begin forming new collaborations aligned with national AMR priorities. This reflected the network’s commitment to fostering partnerships that cut across disciplines and sectors.
The conference also marked the launch of the TARGetAMR comic, an initiative aimed at communicating the complex topics of AMR and genomics in a more accessible and engaging format. Copies were shared with delegates during the event, with wider availability planned via the TARGetAMR website.
We were delighted to host exhibitors from Oxford Nanopore, New England Biolabs, Twist Bioscience, and MicrobesNG, whose contributions provided valuable opportunities for delegates to engage directly with leading technologies, tools, and expertise supporting AMR genomics research.
Reflecting on the event, TARGetAMR Co-Director Professor Kate Baker said:
“It was fantastic to see such a diverse community come together with a shared purpose. The energy in the room really highlighted the power of collaboration in tackling AMR.”
Co-Director Professor Willem van Schaik added:
“This conference showcased the breadth and depth of innovation in AMR genomics. By bringing disciplines together and encouraging new connections, we can accelerate progress and deliver meaningful impact.”
Highlighting the importance of a SHAPE perspective, Dr Steph Johnson, TARGetAMR Associate Director, noted:
“Addressing AMR isn’t just a scientific challenge – it’s also a social and ethical one. Bringing SHAPE perspectives into genomics research is essential to ensure that innovations are equitable, responsible, and grounded in real-world contexts.”
Overall, the conference demonstrated the strength and momentum of the TARGetAMR community. It reinforced the importance of collaboration, innovation, and knowledge exchange in shaping the future of AMR genomics and highlighted the vital role that transdisciplinary networks play in addressing one of the most pressing global health challenges.
