Biography

Dr Liam Rooney is a Fellow in Bacteriology at the University of Glasgow, where he leads a multidisciplinary research programme investigating how the spatial organisation of microbial communities influences infection and antimicrobial resistance. His group combines advanced optical microscopy, culture models, image analysis and multi-omics approaches to study biofilms and host–pathogen interactions across scales, from individual cells to intact tissues and clinical specimens. Current research focuses on polymicrobial and prosthetic joint infections, integrating spatial imaging with genomic and functional approaches to understand infection architecture, microbial interactions and treatment tolerance. He also develops accessible imaging technologies, including low-cost 3D-printed optics, to broaden the use of advanced microscopy in microbiology and infection research.
