Biography
Eric Bortz, PhD, is Principal Investigator of Pathogenomics at the Kyiv School of Economics (Ukraine), Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Alaska Anchorage (USA), and an Affiliate in Microbiology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. Dr. Bortz specializes in pathogen genomics approaches for pathogen discovery in humans and animals, and to understand emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Collaborative projects include:
- Deploy nanopore sequencing methods for ESKAPEE pathogens in hospitalized patients, and AMR sources in commercial farms, in Ukraine.
- Apply rapid, targeted nanopore sequencing (tNGS) to map drug resistance and lineages in M. tuberculosis (freezeTB).
- Develop metagenomics (mNGS) approaches for pathogen strain identification, lineage assignment, and AMR detection applicable to humans, animals, and environmental samples (wastewater).
